My job is to know about plants.With my podcast, Plants Grow Here, I interview industry experts, professionals and enthusiasts on topics related to horticulture, landscaping and ecology. Each of the 200+ episodes aim to cover an individual topic, and my guests and I collaborate on episode outlines so that we can cover each topic comprehensively.I'm also the Hort Support for the legendary plant breeder Ozbreed, where I consult with landscape architects, designers, and nursery growers. I answer inquiries, troubleshoot, create workshops and webinars, visit growers, assist the marketing team, write at least 8 articles a fortnight for print and web, as well as provide feedback and advice on upcoming trends, research opportunities, and desirable plant characteristics.A decade in landscape maintenance has given me a different perspective to the the people I work with. Long after the designers moved on from their gardens, and the nursery stopped stocking the plants that were used, I was leading crews in every type of landscape you can imagine, from public parks to commercial properties, shopping centres, domestic acreages, inner city town houses, and much more.I was on the National Council for the Australian Institute of Horticulture for around a year and a half and have recently steeped down to become an Advisor. This was a hard decision as the team are doing some amazing work, but it's time for me to focus on my career as my wife and I are expecting our first child.I was recognised in 2023 with an Award of Excellence from the Australian Institute of Horticulture for my podcast, writing, and my work with TAFE students.I write the Careers column for the Hort Journal, Australia's national horticulture industry print magazine. I cover topics like general advice and spotlights on specific pathways.As a reaction to the staff shortage crisis in the industry, I created a job board called Hort People with over 60 categories, from propagation nurseries to maintenance and everything between. Organisations like Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney and National Trust of Australia have advertised jobs on the site.Some of the workshops I've created and performed include 10 Amenity Horticulture Career Pathways at the Australian Institute of Horticulture 2023 conference, and Solving the Staff Shortage Crisis at the Parks and Leisure Australia 2023 conference.When I grow up, I'd like to become a full-time non-fiction horticulture author. But it's hard to imagine careers like that existing in the future, so hopefully I can continue talking about plants for a living.
