Founded to create and operate a new ‘flow-through’ Class of Trade for grocery products, NON-STOP Logistics evolved through several metamorphoses and emerged as Evant, a demand planning and replenishment software company backed by Kleiner Perkins. During this twelve-year span, I played various operational roles starting as a founder and first VP Engineering to VP Product Strategy/Design. Evant was purchased by Manhattan Associates in 2005. Vice President

Ibm Demandtec Solutions

DemandTec was the pioneer in 'retail price' optimization based upon 'net margin' not 'gross margin' results. Using a Bayesian Inference Engine married to a 'Solver,' DemandTec masticated raw store POS data into the SKU level 'price-elasticity-of-demand' Building upon this SKU data pricing strategy were grouped by Category where they could be evaluated and ultimately implemented at store/web level. I joined DemandTec as employee 10, pre-Round “A” Funding. I contributed in many areas, as i typical of a 'start-up.' My principal contributions were the refactoring of the Engine/Solver mathematics into a 'parallel' and multi-thread structure and the 'closed loop' business process/cycle.DemandTec was acquired by IBM after a successful public offering.

Jan 1989 - Mar 1993

Program Director

Integrated Automation

Founded by two engineers involved in the development of the CCD “Camera” Chip, Integrated Automation was initially focused on developing commercial applications for digital imagery. Leveraging close ties to the hard science departments of the University of California Berkeley, within a few years IA emerged as the preeminent developer of pioneering computer based solutions for the unique business challenges of Fortune 200 companies. Distribution/Logistics Systems – developed a ‘optical pattern code,’ similar to today’s QR Codes that could be read by a high speed non-contact omni-directional scanner. At peak, 3% of the US GDP was distributed using one of the 80 IA scanners typically driven by one of the pioneering Warehouse Management (WBS, WMS and/or WCS) Systems.Functionality of modern WMS can be traced back to these pioneering distribution/logistics systems incorporating: highly accurate scan/sort processes, the first computer generated UPS/RPS/FedEx ‘manifest’, trailer fluid loading, radio directed fork truck operator direction, the first scan based “Pick–to–Light” and “Put-to-Light” systems, the initial VICS compliant labeling systems, and many others. (The direct descended of these Pick and Put systems are currently the ubiquitous “Easy-Pick” System found in Walmart DCs around the world and many Amazon DCs).

1981 - Jan 1992

System Architect/Designer - Contractor (Nvsd)

Keds Usa

• Performed distribution analysis confirming the benefits of relocating all distribution from the Boston area to an ‘enterprise area’ in Louisville KY. • Designed a custom WBS/WMS/WCS supporting ‘in bond’ tracking for the multi-brand centralized distribution facility. Supported shipments to US Retail Outlets and to international outlets.

1991 - 1992 ~1 yr

System Architect/Designer - Contractor (Nvsd)

Cleveland, Oh, Us

• Designed a practical sort algorithm that enabled automated sortation of card replenishment packets to replace manual ‘order filling’ to build the store planogram-specific replenishment cartons required. This technique had eluded AG engineers.• Designed two DC business and control systems, each leveraging the automated sortation capability above, one focused on ‘Everyday Cards’ (Danville, KY) and one focused on ‘Seasonal Cards’ (Osceola, AR). Huge reductions in staff labor (55% and 75% peak, respectively) were possible using automated process. Wrote Conceptual Design documents and development cost/benefit estimates/models for both systems.
