Becoming President of the Barnsdall Art Park Foundation here in Los Angeles has reignited my passion for community service. It is a privilege to lead this Board in support of such a beloved community treasure, which is now also our city's only UNESCO World Heritage Site.I started my professional life working in the mayoral office of David N. Dinkins in New York City, focusing on homelessness and SRO Housing policy. Subsequently, I chose a grassroots role as a caseworker at The Times Square Hotel, a project so groundbreaking that its founder, Roseanne Haggerty, was awarded a MacArthur prize. Obtaining a Clinical Social Work degree while working in the field, I eventually joined the leadership of Project Reachout, a service continuum encompassing street outreach, psychiatric and medical care, rehabilitation, transitional and supportive housing, job training and placement. My New York story ended as my wife embarked on her medical training, residency, and fellowship, requiring us to relocate repeatedly over the next eleven years. During this period, I pursued a long-cherished dream of making art: teaching painting at the university level, exhibiting, curating, and writing art criticism. While making art, I continued to work other jobs to support my family, including leading the biotech company Imtakt USA as its Chief Operating Officer, gaining a wide range of experience in for-profit and university settings.
