I have been a RGN for 3 years now, I have just completed my revalidation. I have been working as anurse on a haematology/oncology ward since I qualified from the University of Greenwich. I was promoted to Charge nurse about 1 year ago. My current role includes me managing a team of nurses and healthcare assistants, I liase with members of the MDT in regards to our patients, the care they recieve and in time the safe and planned discharge back to their residence. Since I qualified I have been back to University on two seperate occasions. I have completed both the Chemotherapy and Mentorship courses at the University of Greenwich. I also have skills in cannulation, accessing patients bloods via veins, Hiccman lines and PICC lines. I am also able to catherise gentlemen. I have dealt with patients through each steps of the cancer pathway, from initail diagnosis, to admission to the ward, the administration of chemotherapy and at times adverse reactions, to unfortunatly the palliative care aspect of the illness

I began my work here working in a nursing home, caring for elderly patients with cognitive disabilities and challenging behaviour. Here I assisted individuals carry out their activities of daily living, I developed a wide range of communication skills as some of the service users could not speak or communicate their needs clearly. I learned a lot of deescalation techniques as some of the patients got agitated and became verbally/physically violent towards staff and other residents. After a year or so, I was promoted to work in the community, in a transitional living unit. Here we as a team catered for patients who had come from the secure units, to integrate them into community living. Here I promoted independence to a team of patients with cognitive disabilities, challenging behaviour and acquired brain injuries. We though them how to independently carry out their activities of daily living, how to cook, how to manage their money, how to shop for themselves and work towards their independent goals.
