A collaboration project between Heriot-watt University and Edinburgh Gin distillery, which involves the development of a gin recipe in small laboratory size. The recipe is then to be scaled-up to mass production levels for release in the summer of 2016 and to be available across the UK.

My main responsibilities involved the analysis of spirit quality for immature and mature spirit with the use of: Gas Chromatography, Flame atomic adsorption, DMA, UV-vis spectrometry, sensory analysis and various wet chemistry techniques. Responsible for maintaining stock of lab consumables and analytical standards. This has greatly increased my time management skills, balancing the set up and operation of various lab equipment simultaneously in order to meet report deadlines. All results have to be submitted prompt to the correct team members throughout the distillery to ensure the smooth running of the site and the release of tankers; therefore, excellent communication skills are vital for this role.My non-routine analysis responsibilities include the production of official documentation for Certificates of Analysis and having an open line of communication within the technical team for resolving customer complaints. All sample analysis is carried out to GLP standards, documented in LIMS and samples are stored in accordance with HMRC requirements.I have also gained valued experience from participating in the 5S programme which has increased my ability to drive improvements and efficiency in lab while promoting a safety culture through observation awareness.
