GIS analyst and developer. Built command and control software for dealing with emergency situations such as snowstorms.
After a brief, but successful position as a crew leader doing field work, I was offered a position in the Geography Department of the Regional Census Center, which is responsible for the 2010 U.S. Census in New York and New Jersey.I was part of a team dedicated to providing geographic support for the 2010 Census. This included creating maps, and performing a wide variety of tasks designed to ensure the quality of Census geographic data. Towards the end of my appointment I was invited to join a team tasked with organizing tens of thousands of GIS files into a comprehensive, coherent and consistent database. When it became apparent that we would not be able to implement our designs before most of the staff had their appointments expire, I wrote a Python script that automated most of the work, saving hundreds of hours and tens of thousands of dollars.
This position was a summer internship at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. I used image processing techniques to extract data from infrared imagery of sea spray droplets as part of a vast research effort to study the effect of sea spray on hurricane intensity. I developed and validated a technique for tracking individual droplets between frames in digital videos, allowing us to measure the trajectory and rate of evaporation of droplets. The project successfully validated the use of infrared imagery to study sea spray, and culminated with a successful poster presentation to fellow interns and senior researchers.
Provided research support for a faculty member. Performed experiments to study clay-bacteria interactions. Quickly learned to operate atomic absorption spectrometer to speciate New York City aerosols. Operated x-ray diffractometer to study geologic field samples. Used ArcGIS to study distribution of ammonium sulfate aerosols in the United States as part of an independent study, with results presented at City College in October, 2008.
