Acted as an on-site biological monitor for a pipe-replacement project. This included extensive songbird and raptor nest-searches, and monitoring of active nests. Interacted with pipeline crew and foreman daily. Performed geomorphology monitoring, including longitudinal profiles and sediment characterization of a dam impacted watershed.

Led a field effort to assess winter carnivore presence on the Flathead National Forest. Established and maintained 12 baited camera stations and conducted track surveys on established routes. Snowmobiled and snowshoed for access. Worked safely in occasional avalanche conditions. Performed basic snowmobile repair.

Identified and counted over 2,000 hawks in flight at a migration site south of Missoula. Identified raptors by subtleties of shape, flight pattern, and plumage – often at great distance. Managed data and recorded hourly weather observations. Also trapped and banded hawks and golden eagles.

Surveyed and monitored northern spotted owls on timber company lands in northern California. Used digital caller to elicit nighttime responses from owls, followed up during the day to locate owls and determine nesting status using USFWS protocol. Navigated to call points and territories using GPS and maps. Work required skilled use of 4WD trucks and ATVs. Worked alone, often without cell or radio service.

Navigated the many duties of a faculty member at a small, private boarding high school. Prepared and taught lessons in both science and English. Graded students and wrote frequent summaries of their performance in class for parents and other faculty. Lived with students and supervised them in a dormitory. Coached soccer and hockey, including driving buses to distant away games. Closely advised five students and their parents - working through course selection, performance, and disciplinary issues. Was frequently on duty over weekends, helping with activities and keeping track of students. Gave and received feedback on student and faculty performance and ways to improve.

Studied the effects of habitat thinning on Mexican spotted owls in the Sacramento Mountains. Conducted night-time surveys for owls, and followed up with nest-finding and captures. Confirmed breeding status of owls using mousing techniques, captured owls with both snare poles and mist-nets. Banded and color-banded owls. Established grids for both small mammal trapping and vegetation surveys. Trapped and identified small mammals. Entered data into Arcview.

Winthrop, Wa

Trapped and monitored wolverines in the North Cascades of Washington. Aided in anesthetizing and fitting trapped wolverines with GPS collars, and used snowmobiles and snowshoes to check and maintain wolverine traps. Used handheld telemetry to check trap status. Was the lead biologist on a highly successful new effort at documenting individual wolverines with remote, baited camera stations. Designed and modified camera stations. Broke trail on snowmobiles and snowshoes. Located a local wolf pack with handheld telemetry.

Olympia, Wa

Studied the effectiveness of three different logging buffers for non-fish-bearing streams. Characterized streams and woody debris. Surveyed for amphibians using light touch, triple pass, and block net techniques. Identified and measured ten species of salamanders, newts, and frogs. Placed, collected, and processed periphyton tiles. Worked and camped in cold, rainy conditions with up to ten other technicians. Volunteered for western toad surveys.

Designed and conducted a study of woodpeckers and brown creepers on three study areas in Juneau. Nest-searched and monitored nests, spot-mapped bird locations. Entered data into GIS and Excel. Managed all data and data sheets, including mapping nest and bird locations in ArcView. Traveled to Icy Bay and camped there while surveying for Kittlitz's murrelets. Operated a skiff in icy and uncharted waters. Attempted to capture murrelets from skiff and Zodiak at night and in daylight. Recorded behavioral data on the murrelets. Recorded daily locations for one radio-tagged murrelet. Transcribed all data.

Spent the winter months snow-tracking lynx for a student working on his master’s thesis. Supervised other two crew members in the student’s absence. Snowmobiled on groomed trails and off-trail, looking for lynx tracks. Tracked lynx on snowshoes while logging location and behavior data on a Trimble GPS unit. Characterized general vegetation information and prey track abundance at plots spaced every 200 meters. Collected lynx hair and scat for DNA analysis. Trained crewmembers on snowmobile and GPS use. Downloaded GPS data to computers. Used snowmobiles in a variety of terrain and snow conditions, and participated in basic snowmobile repair.
