Undergraduate Research Assistant
Prototyped a wearable vest for individuals suffering peripheral vision loss or blindness. This vest acted as a watchdog for potential objects and that could get in the user’s path. This was achieved by using a raspberry pi and Bluetooth microcontrollers, as well as depth sensing cameras. My job was to design the system and create a platform for our codebase to run on. This included making sure there was enough memory, processing power, and enough connections could be established within our system’s bandwidth. I developed in C++ for the application and Python for the connections to the peripheral systems. It was my duty to make sure that we had image backups every week and schedule jobs on the system to make sure the system ran correctly on startup. This job had exposed me to agile programming methods and continuous integration software (GitHub and GitLab). Finally, I learned a valuable skill of working with a team of three in a fully remote environment. I learned how to schedule, keep my team in the loop, and ensure we were all on the same page with our agile sprints.
3D Biomotion Research Assistant
My responsibilities were to process large amounts of data from accelerometers and motion sensors for various projects. I did contract work for NASA, the military, and the National Science Foundation. For NASA, I tested a cubic satellite apparatus in microgravity conditions. On Zero-Gravity Corporation’s plane, I had completed 120 free falls while obtaining data from the sensors. As the leader of the group, my duties were to make sure my team of 5 were able to do their jobs under harsh gravitational conditions and get the data that we needed. Also, I needed to be sure that our virtual computing environment was set up and ready in under 5 minutes after takeoff. I had developed mostly in MATLAB for this position, as data processing and graphical demonstrations were a major part of this job.
Research Group
CABOOM stands for CubeSat Articulated Boom Option in Microgravity. Through an infrared motion-capture system and accelerometers, my team and I had built an apparatus to track the behavior of a scaled NASA Cubic Satellite in zero gravity conditions. Aboard a modified Boeing 727 at The Zero-Gravity Corporation, I went through 4 days of zero-gravity testing.
