I’m a fourth-year engineering student specialising in renewable energy systems. I feel a responsibility to protect the natural environment and want to contribute to renewable energy projects in the future. During my course, I engaged with a diverse range of modules and projects, using them as valuable opportunities to expand my knowledge and enhance my skills portfolio. My greatest interests are renewable energy from environmental flows and fluid dynamics. I’m very interested in energy consultancy, which I gained experience in when formulating my individual project (IP) titled: The cumulative impact of free-stream tidal energy on the UK electrical grid, which contains feasibility study-related sections and other consultancy aspects.In my fourth-year group project, we created a novel wave-current generation system with stakeholders, Armfield and HR Wallingford. Our work will inform the design, scaling and manufacture of a wave-current generation system 6x the size to be installed in the Southampton Science Park. I took the role of electronics lead during the project and was also responsible for data acquisition and analysis.Before university, I went on the Ten Tors challenge, Duke of Edinburgh walks and a month-long expedition to Ecuador with the Dorset Expeditionary Society, in which we scaled mountains, went on challenging mountain bike rides and spent 4 nights in the Amazon. I’ve always found freedom in these activities as they make you feel more connected to nature. They don’t require fast-paced thinking or intricate skill, but I enjoy them because they push your mental and physical limits and give you a sense of pride when accomplished.I am happiest when competing in ‘flow state’ sports. The feeling of complete focus is addictive. My passion for the outdoors and sports is the reason I value my struggle with chronic pain during university as my greatest achievement. My physical constraints meant I had to broaden my horizons, overcome setbacks and show great discipline and perseverance. One of my proudest moments is the first 5km I ran 20 months after the surgery which gave me chronic pain. My first part-time job was as an employee at McDonald’s where I learned the importance of supply chain management and safety standards. Time in the kitchen afforded me a high degree of responsibility, in a pressured environment, where time management and interaction with senior and junior staff were key to success. As a front-of-house employee, I represented the company, displaying the company’s core values and gaining experience in customer relations.
