Dr. Daniel Hobley is an environmental modeller and scientist in the Sustainable Agricultural Systems Modelling, Software, and Geospatial Sciences team at ADAS. His expertise is in analysis and simulation of Earth surface systems and processes, and he has 18 years of experience in development of conceptual, scientific, and mathematical models and software. He has delivered projects involving management of large-scale dataset acquisition and management, numerical and statistical modelling, uncertainty analysis, GIS analysis, applied research, and software and toolkit development. In particular, he has a long track record in development and deployment of gridded, time-explicit environmental, hydrological and landscape models, in particular finite difference models and cellular automata. He is expert in creation and maintenance of testing suites on large, multi-developer scientific software projects, and on analysis method reproducibility and software sustainability. He is a Fellow of the Software Sustainability Institute.Subject knowledge includes effects of land-use change; climate change and its effects, in particular on eco-hydrology, crop growth, land use, and land value; surface water hydrology; sediment transport; statistical testing of significance; statistical fitting of model output to environmental data and time series; and analysis of epistemic uncertainty. Specific technical skills include hypothesis testing; numerical and statistical model design & implementation; Bayesian and Monte Carlo statistical methods; statistical simulation of data; model integration; geospatial analysis & methods development; modelling of stochastic processes; and test design.Dan leads development of the Land Use Choices Tool for EA. This software enables a user to prioritise land use change options across a landscape according to their policy preferences and goals, and to understand the associated benefits, costs, and consequences. He is also currently leading re-development and enhancement of the ADAS Irriguide irrigation decision support tool.
