I joined Cory Brothers looking to advance my career and take on a fresh challenge. Working as a Hub Operator I oversee our clients chartered vessels which are primarily tankers orientated around the petrochemicals industry. My day to day duties involve nominating agents, creating and sending time sheets, data entry, obtaining costs, creating proforma's, agreeing fees, liaising with agents to answer queries, arranging crew changes and ordering stores and bunkers.Since joining this company I have gained a lot more familiarity with the shipping industry, its processes and terminology. This job also commands that I work overtime which comes in the form of working evenings and weekends on top of the usual 08:30 – 17:00, every other week.

I initially joined Intertek as a member of the goods-in team. My daily tasks were orientated around the receiving and booking in of fuel samples and lube oils for testing in the lab. In November of the same year I switched my role to that of a laboratory analyst in the light distillates lab. Here, my duties were focused primarily on the testing of jet fuel samples as well as the blending and testing of various other products including diesel and gasoline. With all the samples subject to varying deadlines for results, I was constantly re-organising the order in which the samples were prioritised so that I could work as efficiently as possible as well as meeting the demands of the customer. I also compiled the reports after the testing was complete and send them out to the corresponding customers. I regularly worked overtime which would be at any time of day or night given that the lab was on a 24/7 operating schedule.

I started this job shortly after leaving school as a weekend job during my college education. Working as a cashier I worked my way up to the position of Team Leader. Still working on the checkout department, I left as a full time employee placed in charge of keeping the checkouts running, answering cashier calls and customer queries. Some of my other tasks included clearing of money in the cash office with the senior management, scheduling cashiers, making sure all tills were cleaned and fully stocked for the next day’s trading, recording and disposing of bad goods, store announcements and answering the phone.I regularly stayed later after my shift to help management on other departments or to overview outside companies whilst working (such as installing new equipment or doing repair work).

From the ages of 13 to 15 I worked in a pet shop after school and at weekends selling fish, aquariums, equipment and treatments. My duties included feeding and caring for the livestock consisting of cold water, tropical and marine fish, crustaceans, corals and plants together with the cleaning and maintenance of the tanks, pumps and other equipment. In addition I served customers and advised them on which equipment and livestock to buy as well as maintenance and problem solving.

Canvey Island, Essex

During the summer holidays when I was 16, I worked for a few weeks at Oikos oil and chemical terminal. After an initial induction course and training I worked for the maintenance department performing a variety of tasks on ground works, painting and cleaning always undertaken under the applicable health and safety standards applicable for a site storing hazardous materials in bulk such as petrol, diesel, aviation fuels, caustic soda and sulphuric acid. Works were performed throughout the site and the jetty area, as well as in the boiler house and water treatment plant.
