My favorite composer is Jean Sibelius. That is the answer to the question I am often asked when people discover that my college major was music - particularly given my career path as a CPA. I did not have a complementary minor in accounting or business. I was simply all in for music as an undergraduate. It took me a few years to find the more "traditional" accounting path, but it was my early experiences in theater and arts management when I realized I was missing the key language of business - accounting.I went all in on accounting - first completing my MBA in the subject, then passing the CPA exam and then gaining practical experience with EY. Combining my newfound command of accounting with my passion for arts and entertainment, I dove into the media industry in New York City. I spent my formative years at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia where I grew from managing the SEC reporting process to leading the function. Along the way, I sharpened my accounting skills by working with the Controller on all technical matters and broadened my perspective by collaborating with our segment managers to create consolidated forecast models. I was also actively involved with all acquisitions and investments that the company had undertaken. My proudest moments included speaking to analysts and investors during our CFO transition, presenting to the Board of Directors and converting our SEC filing process to Workiva (then WebFilings). In 2017, I found an amazing opportunity to join MongoDB just prior to the IPO. I had been looking to branch out beyond financial reporting, but the open role at MongoDB was unique in that it had never previously existed. I was enticed by the opportunity to build a function from scratch; to take all my previous experiences and pain points to create optimal processes; to write a new symphony. In addition to building out the financial reporting function, I also redefined and grew the technical accounting function. And, in 2021, I became responsible for elevating our corporate accounting function to meet the global demands of a fast-growing company. I am always looking for new challenges and most recently, I joined BuzzFeed as their Chief Accounting Officer. Combining my technical background with my operational and process experiences to now lead the entire accounting organization has been immensely rewarding. I thoroughly enjoy building teams and leaders and collaborating with executives. Everything I enjoyed about music - the details, the precision, the collaboration, the results - is everything I enjoy in my career. I am all in.
