I have now been in my current post as community hub access officer for just over one year. In this time, the position has grown as the team of which I am a member has grown. Being a critical worker and being on the front line in helping people who are struggling with Covid 19 related issues has thrown me in to a series of challenges, curveballs and seat of the pants moments that I never would previously have believed was within my skill set to overcome. But I feel we have overcome and continue to overcome challenges as we respond as a team to policy changes, increased workloads and increased complexities in the nature of our daily tasks. I am truly grateful to be part of this team and to work alongside other amazing teams at Brighton and Hove council including Access Point, the Local Discretionary Social Fund (LDSF), social workers, youth workers, benefits officers and a whole lot of people striving to help people manage aspects of the complex lives we lead in Brighton and Hove. Whilst proud to be working at BHCC I also keep my toes in the water of my former profession, and one that I know has given me a wide skill set that I have brought into my current role, which all began back in 2005 with a job in Taiwan teaching children in a chain of kindergartens in Taipei. My responsibilities extended to facilitating and leading teacher development workshops. On returning to the UK I worked at 3 separate schools of English, teaching all levels from beginners to proficency. At Regency College I became a senior teacher, responsible for teacher mentoring, teacher development and content creation for bespoke classes aimed at working professionals. I am passionate about education and found no greater sense of achievement than when I can see students engaging and exploring the complex maze of learning English.
