CurrentLead advocacy efforts for issues related to the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA); protection and defense of the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale (NARW) and Rice’s whale; conservation programs linked to private lands in the 2024 Farm Bill; USDA Wildlife Services’ Nonlethal Initiative; the Migratory Bird Treaty Act; and the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge.Successfully advocated for increase in funding for USDA Wildlife Services’ Nonlethal Initiative by partnering with NRDC and showcasing benefit of the program to states and districts. Increased appropriations from $1.38M to $2.5M in FY22 and from $2.5M to $4.5M in FY23 and FY24, an overall increase of >200% from initial funding level.Aggressively defending proposed vessel speed rule to protect the critically endangered North Atlantic right whale, and to pre-empt problematic legislation targeting Rice’s whale. Leading robust advocacy campaigns with multiple coalitions and grassroots activists to confront misinformation, and ongoing numerous legislative attacks. Succeeded in excluding problematic provisions from the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act and FY24 Appropriations bills.Cultivated bipartisan relationships to identify champions for proposed Farm Bill conservation program changes that would protect wildlife on private lands. Engaged in coalition meetings and lobbied Congressional Agriculture Committee staff as well as the offices of Committee members and members of the Endangered Species Act Caucus.Advocated for a planned proposed rule to establish a permitting system to govern the incidental take of migratory birds. Engaged environmental advocacy coalition and congressional staff to draft legislation, crafted a public affairs strategy, and targeted select influential Republican-friendly stakeholders to garner bipartisan support.
