My work primarily focuses on the development and implementation of femtosecond (0.000000000000001 s or fs) two-dimensional vibrational spectroscopy (2D-IR) as a new method for the characterisation of specific bio-molecular drug targets and therapeutics. My previous experience in the application of ultrafast spectroscopic methods to biological systems stems from (pre)doctoral work conducted at the University of Leeds, where I obtained a PhD in Physical Chemistry in 2005 working on the photochemistry of light-cleavable disulphide cross links as a means to quickly and efficiently initiate protein-folding. I subsequently joined the University of Amsterdam (UvA) as a postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) working on a Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM) funded project entitled "The Mechanics of Molecular Machines" under the supervision of Professor Wybren Jan Buma and Dr Sander Woutersen.My current role at the University of Strathclyde is that of a joint postdoctoral research associate shared between the groups of Dr Paul A. Hoskisson (SIPBS) and Dr Neil T. Hunt (based in the Department of Physics) working on a novel project funded through the Leverhulme Trust. The collaboration centres on combining 2D-IR with conventional FT-IR and 1H-NMR spectroscopies to investigate the fluxionality and protein-drug binding of front-line remedies such as Isoniazid-NADH adducts as they interact with multi-drug resistant disease promoters, exemplified by the InhA protein in Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), in order to disentangle and understand the mechanism behind the resistance.
