Smoky Mountain Service Dogs is a 502(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Lenoir City that provides custom trained mobility assistance service dogs to our area's veterans with disabilities at no cost to them. Typically, recipients of the service dogs may have suffered a traumatic brain injury or limb loss where balance and mobility are significantly compromised.These wonderful service canines are trained for approximately two years and more than 2,000 hours in preparing for their life of service with a deserving veteran. After a home visit with the veteran, the dogs are custom trained for three additional months based on the specific needs of the veteran. After the custom training, the veteran comes to the Knoxville area for two weeks of team training with his or her matched dog. Once a public access test is passed, a wonderful "Passing of the Leash" graduation ceremony is held.Smoky Mountain Service Dogs has no paid administrative positions, so approximately 96 cents of every dollar goes directly to the care and training of the dog and recipient. There are approximately 90 local volunteers who assist with puppy raising, socializing and the respite fostering of the dogs in training. Just recently, SMSD received the Gold Star Accreditation from Assistance Dogs International. There are only 114 accredited organizations worldwide — 56 in the U.S. — and of the 56 U.S. organizations only 13 serve veterans. SMSD is one of only three accredited organizations in the nine-state area surrounding Tennessee and the only one in our state. I am extremely proud to be apart of this wonderful organization and its ongoing care for our wounded veterans and their families.

Auburn University Canine Detection Training Center/Ahpp

I assisted and develop instruction material and conduct educational programs for Auburn University Canine Detection Training Institute. Conducting basic and advance explosive and narcotic detection training courses, instruct handlers in methods of canine obedience and discipline. My position at Auburn has given me the opportunity to advance training in vapor wake detection. I have several years in management and handling of explosive material. Participated in cutting edge classified and non-classified experimentation with dogs and technology in support of a range of government agencies.

I have patrolled with the assigned Military Working Dog (MWD), in support of 6 MAJCOMs and 50 hosted units on several installation. I provided either explosive or drug detection capability to protect an installation and its resources valued at over $16 billion. Also responsible for daily grooming, feeding and care of assigned MWD and those within the kennel during the shift. Specialized in obedience and proficiency training on assigned MWD using multiple target detection. Responsible for correcting behavior of MWD when mixed with a base population of over 25,000. Keeps flight chief informed of best ways to utilize MWD's strengths and minimize its weaknesses, to secure the largest industrial complex in Robins Air Force Base, Georgia. Responsible for the accountability and safe transport of all training aids in detection training. I ensured proficiency detection training and certification standards are maintained. Trained handlers and military working dogs on all aspects of military working dog training. Reports and reacts to dog alerts. Maintains dog training and usage records. Responsible for storage, handling, and security of drug and explosive training aids. I have also performed explosive detection side by side with the U.S. Secret Service for purpose of Presidential protection on many occasions
