Sofia, Bulgaria

During my time as a Fulbright Fellow in Sofia Bulgaria, I researched the development of organized crime in Bulgaria following the collapse of the communist regime in 1989. My project focused on the lower echelons of organized crime, often referred to as "violent entrepreneurs" by fellow researchers, and "Mutri" (thug or gangster in Bulgarian) as a popular label in Bulgarian society. My goal was not only to document this phenomenon, but also to analyze the unique character of Bulgarian organized crime in order to compare it with other crime traditions in Eastern Europe. Sport plays a key part in this narrative, as many of the so-called Mutri were former athletes (particularly wrestlers and boxers), and these sports were well suited at imbuing skills valuable in underworld activities. By employing a mix of archival research and interviews, I hope to contribute to the body of knowledge surrounding Bulgarian organized crime and shed light on its unique qualities.As part of the cultural exchange element of the Fulbright Fellowship, I interacted with Bulgarians not only during my daily routine, but also as a volunteer judge for the BEST Foundation. BEST is an NGO founded and run by American Fulbrighters that conducts English speech and debate tournaments for Bulgarian students.During my grant period, I was very fortunate to be nominated to represent the Bulgarian-American Fulbright Commission at the annual EU-US Young Leaders Seminar sponsored by the Belgian Fulbright Commission in Brussels. During this seminar, I collaborated with Fulbrighters from other E.U. countries, as well as other European professionals and scholars from various fields. Together we deliberated over the topic "The Future of Work," and endeavored to find solutions for the issue of job security in an increasingly technology driven work space.

Penn State History Department internship - assisted Dr. Catherine Wanner with research regarding the politics of religion in Russo-Ukrainian relations.- Analyzed public speeches of President Vladimir Putin and Patriarch Kirill (Russian Orthodox Church, Moscow Patriarchate) for religious undertones pertaining to the conflict in Ukraine and its justification.- Assisted in organizing flight schedules for scholars participating in a conference in Kyiv, Ukraine, in the Fall of 2016.

As an intern at the Pennsylvania Military Museum, I worked in the archive and authored biographical sketches of soldiers who served in the Pennsylvania 28th Infantry Division, American Expeditionary Force, during World War I.To fulfill the academic portion of the internship, I wrote a textual analysis of a soldier's diary from the First World War. My paper, titled, "The Plight of the Doughboy: World War I as Seen Through the Eyes of Harold W. Pierce," was later published in the Fall 2018 edition of "Pennsylvania History: A Journal of Mid-Atlantic Studies."
