The role of peptide communication in the brain has not been fully illuminated and there exists a need for new tools for detecting and measuring the real-time release of nuropeptides during behavior. To that end I designed and executed projects to make and test these tools, including biosensors for the detection of the neuropeptide/hormone oxytocin, as well as the neuropeptide somatostatin. I have also devised a dual-color miniature head mounted microscope capable of measuring fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) based biosensors. • Seasoned project manager: manage and executed parallel projects to develop 2 new research tools (biosensor and miniature microscope) for real time monitoring of neuropeptides within the brain in. Launched both tools within 24 months. • Establish protocols and QCs standards for cell culture to generate cell based biosensors. Employed cutting edge microscopy/imaging, high throughput screening, photometry, and animal behavior to validate the biosensor. • Demonstrate regulatory compliance by reporting lab activities in the electronic notebook, tracking research subjects, writing technical and regulatory documents for working with animal subjects, and managing resource procurement using the established vendor system • Mitigate risks by strictly adhering to established SOPs for laboratory work in the molecular biology, tissue culture and vivarium space. Routinely evaluated SOPs to ensure data integrity and efficiency • Organize and manage weekly in person and virtual meetings using Outlook Calendar, Slack, Zoom, and prepared meeting agenda and minutes containing follow-up actionable items
Graduate Research Scientist/Project Manager
Alcohol use disorder (AUD, aka alcoholism) is a chronic relapsing brain disorder that impacts the lives of around 15 million Americans and excessive alcohol use cost the US $249 billion in 2010 according to the CDC. Currently, there are only three FDA approved drugs for treating AUD and new, more selective and potent drugs are urgently needed. In order to identify new targets for treatment I planned and initiated experiments to investigate how a critical population of cells in the brain and the communication to those cells is altered by excessive alcohol drinking.• Trained and supervised 13 research professionals. Delegated 20% of work. Managed and executed 4+ projects for developing novel targets for pharmacological intervention of alcohol use disorders leading to 3 peer-reviewed papers and +$1.5 M in grant funding• Demonstrated innovation by developing and optimizing 3 in vivo functional assays and 2 in vitro assays leading to the development of 8 SOPs • Mitigated risks by maintaining established QCs standards to acquire in vivo/vitro functional data, harvest and process biological samples for downstream analyses, leading to 1 peer-reviewed paper• Exhibited technical and scientific literacy by reviewing 10+ papers for peer-reviewed journals and reporting findings to cross-functional team members and stakeholders in a concise manner• Product market knowledge, commercial acumen, and negotiation skills shown by negotiating contracts for 1 electrophysiology rig, 1 imaging setup, 1 optical stimulator, and 1 gas chromatograph, able to reduce costs by 25% while maintaining high productivity• Exhibited communication skills by preparing meeting agenda, minutes with follow-up action items for one collaborative projects resulting in 1 peer-reviewed paper• Developed and maintained professional relationships with thought leaders (KOLs) for collaborative research projects and peer discussions
Lab Manager & Research Assistant
Substance abuse is an issue for patients suffering from the brain disease schizophrenia. An open question was if this drug use was an attempt at self medication or if the disease itself drives drug abuse. I evaluated cocaine use in an animal model of schizophrenia. In this model adult animals display similar behaviors to humans that suffer from the disease. These animals were given access to cocaine and their usage of the drug was tracked and analyzed. I found that the schizophrenia model animals had a much stronger drive to consume cocaine and took longer to stop drug seeking behavior compared to control animals. This finding would suggest that drug abuse is a symptom of the disease rather than a form of self medication. Collaborated with thought leaders at the National Institute of Health on research projects that resulted in presentations at The Society for Neuroscience international meetings.• Managed equipment and supply ordering, subject acquisition, and lab maintenance to support the entire research team and meet critical deadlines.• Spearheaded animal surgery, animal behavior, histology, and data analysis and visualization in collaboration with an external stakeholder, leading to 1 publication and 2 presentations.
Laboratory Technician
Bisphenol-A (BPA) is commonly found in plastics and the lining of canned foods and is capable of contaminating food, water and soil. This environmental toxin acts as a mimic of the hormone estrogen and can be especially harmful to infants and fetuses by disrupting normal development. I Executed studies that explored what kind of effect BPA exposure during gestation and early development has on adult behavior. I found that animals exposed during this critical period showed behavioral deficits as adults that were similar to animal models of schizophrenia. During this research I scoured the literature and found other studies that, coupled with my findings suggest a link with BPA exposure in early life with the development of schizophrenia or a related phenotype. • Designed, managed, and executed 1 rodent toxicology and behavioral research project leading to a presentation at an international meeting. • Effective multi-tasker capable of succeeding independently as well as in cross-functional teams. Executed behavioral studies and histology leading to 1 presentation and 1 publication. • Analyzed diverse data sets and generated 5 protocols.
