Registered veterinary technician at the seas marine pavilion. Running anesthetic and assisting in procedures for a wide variety of marine mammals, elasmobranchs, and teleosts is part of the normal day. I have a multitude of jobs including phlebotomy, parasitology, radiology, recording keeping and data entry, and anesthesiology. It is a fast paced environment that demands independence and strong multitasking skills. I also have worked at the veterinary hospital at Animal Kingdom, running diagnostics on a wide variety of species. A normal day consists of radiology and blood collection on avian, field work on large hoof stock, behavior training with many species, CT scans, and guest interaction to develop conservation efforts. Pre-planning and team cohesiveness are a must when handling such a wide array of species.

Client education, treating hospitalized patients, and assisting in surgery are parts of my daily routine. I am well versed in a multitude of technical proficiencies including proper radiographic technique, completing dental prophylactic procedures, venipuncture, microscopy, and anesthetics. I have not only developed my technical skills, but had the opportunity to grow in operational aspects as well. I manage all ordering, processing, and inventory of prescription food diets in the hospital, keeping inventory of over $120,000 of retail items annually. I am the sole Animal Restraint Trainer in the hospital responsible for teaching and assessing new employees on proper patient restraint techniques. Whether it is caring for clients or assisting my fellow employees, I stay motivated to get the job done in an efficient manner.

A large part of the technical experience I acquired while in this position revolved around client communication. Most days centered around extensive client education on preventative care such as vaccinations, dental prophylaxis,and routine medications (heartworm, flea, anti-parasitic, etc.) Instructing clients on pre, intra, and post-operative care, assessing animals, assisting both the client and the doctor during examination, as well as describing the prescribed medications in detail post examination, were all part of the daily routine.

I was a Surgical Technician responsible for monitoring anesthetic procedures and assisting in surgeries. I was also one of the few technicians trained in using an ultrasound unit to find major organs and collect urine via cystocentesis. Working with clients and educating them on animal care and nutrition, examining and medicating animals, dental prophylaxis, intra-oral radiographs, and proper charting of medical records were all in a days work at the hospital.

At this job, I worked with doctors while prepping patients for emergency surgeries, monitored anesthesia, educated clients, and filled prescriptions daily. Because this clinic was a 24-hour facility located in busy urban area of Indianapolis, I quickly developed the ability to calmly and efficiently multi-task in a variety of high-stress and often unusual situations.

As this was my first job in the veterinary field while earning my degree, the position provided valuable hands-on learning opportunities that became the foundation of my early career. I mastered basic skills like patient care and restraint, client communication, animal management in the boarding facility, and home visits. I also monitored anesthetics during complex laser surgeries.
