I am the technical reliability expert for the CCDC GVSC, responsible for tool development, field and test data extraction, data processing and analysis, and training of fellow reliability engineers. As part of this I have worked with analyzing numerous unique data sources, none intended for use in reliability analysis but all providing necessary pieces of the puzzle. To execute this, I needed to drill down into the data that was available in numerous different systems, identify how to bring it all together and then actually carry out the work to do this. I also worked to support an autonomous system where reliability measures were dependent on the context in which the system was being operated. Supporting this project involved working with high resolution system tracking data that needed to be integrated with certain discrete event data. For this work, I developed custom VBA code within Microsoft Excel that parsed through the raw data and processed it into quantifiable reliability metrics.As a hobby, I have also done extensive research into what public sources of NHL data are available. Through my research into the available data, I have identified ways of integrating much of it together to provide more contextual and insightful metrics for team and player performance. Part of this involved writing custom VBA code to interact with the NHL API, parse numerous other NHL data sources, integrate all of these disparate data sources together and then export this processed information into a Microsoft Access Database. Then I worked within Microsoft Access to build flexible queries with this processed data to allow for drilling down into which teams and players performed best in different situations. The work that I performed in this area was presented at the 2019 Seattle Hockey Analytics Conference (SeaHAC) in my presentation “Utilizing Publicly Available NHL Data to Evaluate Situational Team and Player Performance”.
