As a Captain in the Royal Australian Engineers Daniel was posted to 22 Construction Regiment and 4 Combat Engineer Regiment. He undertook numerous roles at both regiments including Troop Commander for Construction, Resources, Training and Plant Troop.Daniel was Officer in Charge of the Army's support to the relief efforts for the Victorian Bushfires. This involved coordinating with other agencies and leading the Army's involvement in fighting the bushfires. The Army's specific role included cutting firebreaks aided by the use of plant equipment to control the spread of the bushfire, protect water supply catchments and to protect civilians and property.In addition Daniel was Superintendent for the Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Program in Borroloola, Northern Territory. This program involved the development of housing, roads and infrastructure services for the local Aboriginal community.
