About Daniel Larrain
Daniel Larraín (n.1981) es un compositor chileno-canadiense, Licenciado en Música de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (2007), Master of Music in Composition de la Universidad McGill (Montreal, Canadá, 2014, Beca Chile, CONICYT) y Doctor en Filosofía con mención en Estética y Teoría del Arte de la Universidad de Chile (2024, Beca Doctorado Nacional ANID).Su proyecto de investigación/creación estudia procesos creativos basados en el traspaso de materiales extramusicales a la partitura, enfocándose principalmente en el método de mapeo de textos y en el estudio del desarrollo de la criptografía musical. Este campo de estudio lo ha abordado tanto desde el ámbito teórico, mediante su investigación académica, como desde la creación musical, teniendo a su haber una decena de obras donde explora las posibilidades creativas de los procesos de traspaso que estudia. Su producción composicional se enfoca principalmente en música acústica de cámara. Sus obras han sido interpretadas por la Orquesta Sinfónica de Vancouver, Nu:BC Collective (Canadá), ContemporarY Ensemble (Suecia), el pianista Andy Costello (E.E.U.U.), DissonArt Ensemble (Grecia), Ensemble Paramirabo (Canadá), y el pianista Dante Sasmay (Chile) entre otros.

CurrentCourse: LATIN AMERICAN MUSICProfessor: Daniel Larraín Vial1. Description:The course will focus on understanding the history, cultural connotations, and sonic traits of Latin American music, aiming to enrich a listening experience devoted to diverse types of popular rhythms and genres that have flourished throughout the continent, while enabling discussions around the topic of Latin American identity. In a first stage, we will point out common characteristics of the music of Latin America as a whole, establishing a ground over which we may analyze the detailed particularities of musical expressions from Mexico, Cuba, Colombia, Brazil, the Andes (a cross-border cultural area ranging from Colombia to Chile, with special prominence in Peru and Bolivia), Argentina and Chile, in a sort of musical journey across the territory. Once in Chile, and having attained a continental perspective, we will study characteristic types of local music, in an effort to understand their genesis, significance and projections.
