I teach in the Engineering College and perform research about how IoT sensors and AI can improve the impacts of global development.

We turned big water pumps on and off with satellites. Utilities need smart dynamic loads to respond to demand response events. We created a novel IoT sensor and actuator tech to control those pumps.

Led development of a novel IoT gateway, firmware, software backend, analytics pipeline, and frontend. The product monitors large water pumps. Thousands of products were deployed measuring the water supply of millions of people.

I designed and built the world's most sophisticated laboratory for measuring wood smoke aerosol from cooking fires. This entailed designing and implementing all of the ventilation, sampling, dilution, calibration, control, and data logging hardware and software to make the laboratory work.

During my graduate studies, I developed sensors, software, and new laboratory methods to measure the impacts of cooking smoke. My research took me to IDP camps in Darfur, post-earthquake Haiti, an arrest in Ethiopia, and flying weather balloon 100,000 feet above India. I created open-source IoT sensors, machine learning tools, time series analytics apps, and constructed the world's most sophisticated laboratory for analytical measurement of cooking smoke.

During my Ph.D., some buddies from Berkeley and I created a startup company to submeter electricity in commercial buildings. Our cool little sensor, the Power Patch, used 3D magnetic and electric field sensors stuck to circuit breakers to back-calculate the power going through each breaker. This allowed anyone to submeter a building without hiring an electrician. As the CTO, I managed the creation of all the hardware, firmware, and software. Persistent Efficiency manufactured thousands of sensors installed all across the USA and operated a backend that ingested and processed 100 GB/day of time series data.

I was the lead systems and design engineer for Airbus A350 hydraulic emergency landing gear extension system. I also lead engineering on the redesign of an electromechanical ballscrew brake actuator for Boeing 787. This involved a lot of engineering and project management with folks like Boeing, Airbus, Lockheed, and Messier-Bugatti.
