Choose a job, which you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.It's the one career advice that I sufficiently agree to, to not just follow it myself but make it my one career advice for my own children. It led me from learning the basic laws of nature to predicting the dynamics of metals to developing SW that synchronizes a CT to the human heartbeat to creating human centric medical devices, to taking the related business responsibility, to where I am now.In case you're still looking for the connection: With each step somebody gave me the opportunity to understand a problem, whose solution would leave at least a small part of the world in better shape than it was before. This is what I call my vocation, because "career" can't possibly put the right bracket around the colorful list above.It has led me to the here and now, heading an R&D team of people, most of whom share this drive. Of course my contribution to this goal has become more indirect: by means of empowering and mentoring talent, by focusing the teams I lead onto the creation of meaningful, productive solutions that help. I do this as a relentless challenger of myself as much as the status quo and by serving as a straight-forward, no-nonsense sparring partner. For my environment, this can be exhausting at times, but maybe it is easier to tolerate, when one understands where I come from: As a 1st generation academic, I had to learn early on to question everything around me, especially the status quo; to happily enter unfamiliar territory; to aspire to what could be rather than accept what is. I benefitted from helping hands along my way, and am now happy to return that favor.You will not find much of what I do in my current position on LinkedIn, as most of it is not fit for this network.
