Daniel MacNeil is a multiple award-winning multi-instrumentalist, composer, and educator based in Halifax. He has performed across Canada and Spain as a soloist, in chamber music settings, and with professional symphony orchestras.Some achievements include composition and arranging for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra, Symphony Nova Scotia, and the Victoria Symphony. All concerts have had tremendous success with rave reviews, and MacNeil has been featured as a guest guitarist, performing in concert with all of these orchestras. As both a composer and instrumentalist, he has been featured and filmed for an entire concert of original works produced by CBC’s studio 60 and the East Coast Music Hour, and he has been featured in countless festivals across Canada. As an instructor, he is an RMT (Nova Scotia Registered Music Teachers' Association), and has been awarded the Teachers Gold Medal Award from the Royal Conservatory of Canada five consecutive years for teaching Eastern Canada gold medal winners in guitar examination competitions. He is a faculty member at the Fountain School of Performing Arts (Dalhousie University) and NSCC, and is also the president of the World Music Museum Society and serves on the Board of Governors at the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts.The founder and director of Canada's New World Music ensemble, MacNeil is a performer and collaborator in a diverse range of “world music” genres (including: flamenco, Latin, Middle Eastern, Indian classical, Balkan, Brazilian, and African to name just a few), however, his musical sensibilities and proficiency as an instrumentalist are equally adept in new music, classical, Jazz, Improv, folk, blues, and fusion styles. He is equally at home as a composer as he is in performance. Drawing on an extremely rich and diverse background, he continually presents new ideas and produces original works for virtually any medium or genre.Additional specialized training includes Middle Eastern music (classical and folk) with renowned musicians and composers (Palestine and Jerusalem), as well as Indian classical music (India). Between 2007-2010, he studied flamenco and Spanish music formally with world class artists in Madrid, Spain, at the renowned flamenco school Amor De Dios, As a working professional, MacNeil performs and composes regularly for soloists, chamber ensembles, orchestra, dance and voice. In addition to performance, composition, and arranging, Daniel teaches a wide variety of genres.
