Mentored Undergraduate Summer Experience (MUSE). MUSE is an 8-week, full-time residential program in which I was responsible for conducting research on crab osmoregulation. Specifically, our research focused on the enzyme sodium-potassium ATPase. During the summer of 2010, I continued my previous study of blue crabs, while also preparing the procedure and controls for a new deglycosylation experiment. I was responsible for conducting experiments independently, and as I assumed leadership, I mentored a new member into the lab.

PERSIST Program. The PERSIST program at the College of New Jersey is a program set up to aid undergraduates that come from an economically disadvantaged background. It is a program that provides the students a tutor for math and science courses. I tutored a freshman student during my sophomore year in both biology and chemistry courses.

Mentored Undergraduate Summer Experience (MUSE). MUSE is an 8-week, full-time residential program in which I was responsible for conducting research on crab osmoregulation. I examined gene expression in gills of blue crabs Callinectes sapidus transferred from low to high-salinity seawater. I was responsible for conducting experiments independently. My work included the following techniques: assay of the activity of an enzyme, assay of total protein, Western Blot analysis, PCR cDNA, and quantitative real-time PCR. I collaborated with my mentor and another student to adapt these techniques to our experiment and to trouble-shoot problems that we encountered.
