During my professional career in analytical chemistry and clinical in vitro diagnostic fields, I’ve had the chance to spend 23 years leading a multi-disciplinary team of R&D. Thanks to this path and thanks to the team I have been part of, I acquired a broad understanding of research and development, and we were able to design many new products that have been industrially manufactured, FDA approved and commercialized worldwide.In the Immunohematology area we designed and developed the DG Gel card, an IVD device for the immunohematology analysis needed prior to a blood transfusion, i.e., ABO, Rh and Kell grouping, antigen typing of red blood cells, direct antiglobulin tests, detection and identification of unexpected antibodies, and compatibility testing. We developed also a preservation solution to prepare human Reagent RBCs used to detect or identify human blood group antibodies, which made the RBC functional and stable for a prolonged period of time.In the hemostasis area we developed screening tests to determine the activity of the extrinsic, intrinsic and common pathway of the coagulation system. The new products developed and launched included: an upgraded Prothrombin time (PT) test, a new Activated Partial thromboplastin time (APTT) test, a new reagent for Fibrinogen determination, a new reagent for Thrombin time (TT), a new formulations for human plasma controls and calibrators, a deficient plasma for Factor VIII, a new series of chromogenic assays to determine the activity of Antithrombin, Heparin, Protein C, and a new immunoassay kit for von Willebrand factor based on latex particles.
