Dreadnought Programme And Capability Officer
Responsible for the c.£31bn Dreadnought Programme within the customer and capability sponsor organisation for the defence nuclear programme. Included scrutiny and approval of c. £1bn pa capital expenditure to ensure programme remained aligned with strategic objectives. Also responsible for sponsorship of long-term capability development.
Commanding Officer
Command of HMS VIGILANT and the UK's nuclear strategic deterrent saw me directly accountable to the Royal Navy's Chief Operating Officer for operational delivery and output. This required delivering success against challenging performance metrics and providing assurance at the corporate level. Owing to the nature of operations I was required to provide autonomous decision-making for extended periods in one of the most scrutinised strategic and operational environments. Leading and managing a multi-disciplinary team I was responsible for balancing operational output whilst continuing to develop and enhance long-term organisational effectiveness. During this period HMS VIGILANT was awarded the Valiant Trophy in 2015 for the strongest performance within the Submarine Flotilla during operational sea training. I also instigated a coaching and mentoring programme that was eventually adopted as best practice throughout the submarine flotilla.
Commanding Officer'S Designate Course
A broad-based requisite course for major unit command within the Royal Navy. Subjects covered included Risk Management, Safety Cultures, Nuclear Engineering, Safety Health and the Environment, Advanced Level Diversity and Inclusion, Coaching and Mentoring and Media Training and Interview Techniques.
Capability Development Manager
Development, introduction, and integration of capability packages to the in-service UK submarine fleet. This included through life planning, risk management, policy development and financial oversight of capability projects and programmes.
Advanced Command And Staff Course
The aim of the Advanced Command and Staff Course is to prepare selected military and civilian officers for senior positions by developing their analytical, decision-making and communication skills. This is a multi-national course with representation from approximately 60 countries to enhance the experience. Based around the key themes of 'ends', 'ways' and 'means' it allows students to examine strategy through to operational delivery. I also took this opportunity to complete an additional elective Masters Programme provides by Kings College London.
Executive Officer
As the lead Head of Department and second in command, I was directly accountable to the Commanding Officer for ensuring that HMS Vanguard and personnel were sufficiently prepared to support the delivery of a challenging operational programme. This included supervision of operational planning and execution, training and performance standards. I was also the lead officer for security, safety, health and environmental policy and implementation, diversity and inclusion and matters surrounding personnel welfare.
Submarine Command Command Course
Selection for this course was a once only opportunity to prove my credentials for submarine command. With a notoriously high attrition and failure rate I finished as top student. It was an opportunity to demonstrate leadership and management and ultimately timely decision-making in the most demanding of scenarios. I was also trained and assessed in risk management, nuclear safety and engineering, Safety, Health and Environment, Security and Diversity and Inclusion.
Principal Warfare Officer Instructor (Submarines)
As the lead instructor for the inaugural PWO(SM) course I was responsible designing and delivering a course that would achieve coherence across the Royal Navy in standards of instruction and assessment.
Operations Officer
Responsible for the detailed planning and execution of the submarine's programme. This required internal and external stakeholder engagement and management to ensure the successful delivery of each unit's operational outputs through effective programme management and coordination.
