Working for one of my true heroes David Ebsworth, created the department and managed public affairs through the HIV-hemophilia calamity and settlement, global withdrawal of plasma derivatives linked to Creutzfeldt-Jakob Diease and a worldwide shortage of immune globulins. The last one because a Wharton School case study. Got to do some good things too, such as Operation Clean Hands with the CDC and American Society of Microbiology and Take It To Heart, an effort to screen and diagnose cardiovascular disease in at-risk populations, with the National Medical Association, National Black Nurses Association and National Alliance for Hispanic Health. I love those guys.

Hired following the Squibb acquisition to support the CEO (who was also chairman and president) on his leadership of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (now PhRMA). Worked on the Medicaid Drug Rebate enactment, European consolidation under the single market initiative, and managed issues including a RICO investigation, Puerto Rico statehood plebiscite and about a half-dozen acquisitions and divestitures. It seemed like we were doing a deal a day.

First and last head of public policy, ending with the sale to Bristol Myers, worked on reimbursement for radiographic contrast agents and the here-today-gone-tomorrow Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act. Got to work for my Roche boss and friend, and meet two wonderful mentors in Joe Stewart and Charlie Sanders.

Brought reimbursement and policy experience to bear on Medicaid payment for antibiotics, third-party payment for the first biotechnology treatments, health-economic research on cardiovascular drugs and advocacy for patients needing treatments for cancer and recalcitrant psoriasis. My boss at Roche recruited me to Squibb.

Those I worked for and with there -- including Harold Burson, Fred Hassan, Bob Chandler, Bob Essner -- set the course for the rest of my career.
