Ph. D. Candidate And Research Assistant
Developed an assay to test aqueous samples for the bacterial lipid endotoxin (an indicator of bacterial contamination) at clinically and industrially relevant concentrations based on polarized light optical microscopy of liquid crystal (LC)-in-water emulsions.Implemented knowledge of colloid and interface science and emulsion chemistry and physics to formulate a wide variety of stable emulsions (LC emulsions, LC Pickering emulsions, oil-in-water emulsions, water-in-oil emulsions).Utilized the tools of colloid and interface science (zeta-potential measurements, light scattering, optical microscopy, surface pressure measurements) to provide fundamental insight into the ordering of LC droplets.Formulated a thermodynamic model for the free energy of LC-in-water emulsion droplets, and applied the model to describe endotoxin–triggered ordering transitions in LC-in-water emulsions.Implemented knowledge of polymer science and emulsion and suspension polymerizations to synthesize spherical and non-spherical polymer microparticles with chemical surface patches using LC emulsions as a template.Synthesized magnetically responsive polymer microparticles and Janus particles from LC emulsion templates.Innovated utilization of flow cytometry as a high-throughput alternative to optical microscopy for characterization of the internal ordering of LC-in-water emulsion droplets.Synthesized polymer capsules by layer-by-layer adsorption of polyelectrolytes on sacrificial microparticles, and used the capsules to prepare monodisperse emulsions.Designed microfluidic devices to prepare monodisperse LC emulsions.Presented at weekly interdisciplinary (biology, physics, material science, engineering) research group meetings, and initiated several collaborative research projects. Maintained and supervised the training and usage of polarized light microscopes, fluorescence microscopes, a flow cytometer, and a Langmuir trough.
