It has been an interesting journey that has come full circle, albeit with a slight twist.I have always been a Geographer, whether is was in the classroom at school and university or at the weekend out climbing in glacial landscapes and kayaking the beautiful rivers of southern England and Wales. The tangent into economics came via the human element of geography...and the need to find a job. Here I observed the power of maths to not only explain known phenomena but to uncover phenomena apparently contrary to our intuition, the ‘ecological fallacy’ springs to mind. Returning to university to do an MSc in Environmental Management I was set on fire by the power of coding to turbo-charge my love affair with geography and spatial statistics, particularly in the agricultural sphere. That was it, I was hooked and hence am now doing a PhD in spatial statistics applied at a landscape scale. I have three goals for my career: 1) to codify existing knowledge so that it can be quantified and modelled,2) to create insight, particularly in the space between Earth Observation data and land managers,3) to increase knowledge accessibility, from explainable AI to presenting research findings in a way that is convenient for non-specialists.
