SSAFA helps the Armed Forces community in a number of ways. The focus is on providing direct support to individuals in need of physical or emotional care.

The Business Committee acts for the General Council, which consists of all graduates and most serving or retired academic staff, and has the responsibility of representing the General Council to the University Court and Senate. I have a particular interest in undergraduate student recruitment and the student experience and wellbeing.

This highly prestigious and selective course caters for some 250 of the very best of the UK’s 44,000 Air Cadets annually. It is a particularly challenging and arduous course, offering lessons in the theory of leadership and increasingly complex practical leadership exercises in unfamiliar outdoor settings. Successful completion of the course requires high levels of commitment and determination and prepares cadets for leadership roles in their cadet units but also in a much wider sense for such roles in their future careers and roles in the community.

The Combined Cadet Force Association is the CCF’s own national charity, supporting the CCF as a leadership development movement for young people in schools, representing the CCF’s 500 school-based units and 51,000 cadets. The CCFA plays a key role in national cadet policy development, advising the MoD and senior civil servants. It has responsibility for marketing, publicity and insurance. The CCFA advises on matters such as• securing balanced investment in school and community based cadet units.• encouraging the development of coherent MoD and single Service CCF policies and processes.• promoting the views of the head teachers in CCF decision making.• retaining the priority for cadet leadership development including promoting the role of senior cadets in organising and delivering training.

Wing Commander, Royal Air Force Air CadetsCommissioned in Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Training) branch 1994 following completion of Initial Officers’ Training course. Responsibilities:• Oversee all activities of staff and cadets in contingent, comprising Army Section, RAF Section and Pipe Band.• Director of a team of 8 full and part time staff and 100+ cadets. Manage participation in training by support teams from the Regular Forces. • Recruitment and commissioning of adult staff, recruitment and retention of cadets. • Health and safety.• Security: personnel, estate and equipment.• Logistics: organisation of regular unit training and off site exercises.• Long and short term strategic planning in line with Tri Service policy.• Managing an annual budget, military pay administration, contractor hire, equipment procurement.• Training and doctrine: creating unit policies, cadet training development and staff CPD.• Liaising with school staff, parents, training providers and the Lord Provost’s Office.• Daily liaison with 51 (Scottish) Brigade, Headquarters Air Cadets RAF Cranwell, Cadet Training Teams, CCF Training, Evaluation and Support Team (RAF), the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA), the Combined Cadet Force Association (CCFA) and senior MOD personnel.

RFCA supports the Reserve Forces and Service Cadet Organisations and informs and influences the wider community on issues relating to the Armed Forces in Society. Membership includes Lords Lieutenant, unit commanders, Regular and Reserve personnel, representatives of Local Government, Universities, Employers, Employees and all four Cadet organisations. Areas of activity include • promoting the Armed Forces in society, ensuring their interests are represented to Government, the Ministry of Defence and to the community at large.• employer engagement and support: with the support of the SaBRE and National Employers Advisory Board (NEAB) campaign it aims to heighten the awareness of the Volunteer Reserve Forces amongst employers. It explains how transferable skills acquired by Reservists benefit the civilian workplace.• recruiting support • Cadets and Youth

• Overseeing UCAS procedures for the College’s 200 applicants each year. • Identifying and publicising opportunities in Higher and Further Education and employment • Co-ordinating input of and participation by team of Senior Management and Guidance colleagues.• Co-ordinating training on aspects of applications including personal statement writing, self presentation, interview skills • Advising on applications to specific institutions and those outside the UK.• Writing references as appropriate.• Specific responsibilities for Oxbridge and other “high tariff universities” candidates.• Advising on SAAS funding procedures • Advising on opportunities for support at university for students with additional needs.• Providing opportunities for mock interviews• Liaising with former pupils requiring assistance with applications. • Developing links with UCAS and individual Higher Education institutions and colleges.• Liaising with College Development & Marketing Office to involve former pupils in providing preparation and training opportunities for applicants.• Tracking progress of applications, completing statistics and monitoring trends, • Arrangements for major annual events including RGC Higher Education Convention, which attracts some 20 major Scottish and other universities, employers and Modern Apprenticeship providers, Gap Year providers, SAAS and the Independent Schools Careers Organisation and is attended by 400 pupils and parents. • Arrangements for S6 induction and looking at qualities, skills and knowledge required “Beyond School”.• Arranging an annual programme and host prominent speakers from politics, business, the media and other fields to address senior pupils on “Beyond School” matters.

This care and justice system is unique to Scotland and exists to protect the safety and wellbeing of infants, children and young people nationally. The role of a Panel Member is to listen and make legal decisions with, and for, these young people. They are there to ensure that the young person is at the heart of every decision taken – because every decision, no matter how big or small, has an impact.

The University Air Squadrons (UAS) offer a unique chance to sample RAF life. Their main role is to attract ambitious and intelligent students into a career as an RAF officer, but joining doesn’t necessarily mean that members have to join the RAF.As well as specialist and flying training, students learn valuable leadership and team-building skills.
