I am a Chemist and Physicist with a background in studying novel materials. I have recently been researching topological materials and superconductors, which have unique electronic properties that could make them suitable candidates for a wide range of technologies. In particular, I measured the electronic band structure of these materials using scanning tunneling microscopy and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to identify unique features of their electronic structure and determine how they respond to various parameters such as temperature or a magnetic field.Besides for carrying out STM and ARPES measurements, I characterized material properties, prepared single-crystal and thin-film samples, operated ultra-high vacuum chambers at liquid nitrogen and liquid helium temperatures, and analyzed data (primarily in IgorPro, but also with Python and MATLAB).Notable projects that I had a lead role on include measuring the topological superconductor Fe-doped PbTaSe2 with STM and observing an electronic state at zero energy. Some evidence suggests that it might be a Majorana zero mode, with applications in quantum computing, although conclusive evidence is lacking. I also studied the topological semimetal FeSn using both STM and ARPES, and in STM I observed that the electrons comprising the Kagome flat band are localized onto the Fe atoms. I further found that applying a magnetic field could be used to manipulate the anisotropy of the flat band.During graduate school, I was also involved in the discovery of a group of symmetry-protected topological semimetals in chiral space groups, measuring CoSi and RhSi with ARPES. I also contributed to projects studying Weyl Semimetals (Co3Sn2S2), Nodal-line Semimetals (Co2MnGa), other topological superconductors (LiFeAs), and Chern magnets (TbMn6Sn6)Prior to graduate school, I designed an annealer using SolidWorks (a computer-assisted design software) and built the annealer using both a manual mill and a CNC-controlled mill. This was used to aid in sample preparation for an STM lab. I also spent a summer in a solid-state chemistry lab where I synthesized zinc and cobalt carbodiimides and analyzed the structure of the reaction products using X-ray powder diffraction. Additionally, in high school I conducted research in a genetics lab where I studied the importance of the DNA sequences Alu retrotransposons on the stress response of cultured 293T cells to hydrogen peroxide stress.
