My professional goal (and passion) is to activate the community. I am a lucky person. I have worked for almost twenty years in an industry where I not only get to change people’s lives through health and fitness but I also hope I am playing a role in assisting to extend their life as well. My first full time role out of university was with City Of Whitehorse (1994) at the Nunawading Recreation Centre running night sporting competitions. If I were to be honest I not only did not fully understand the positive impact I was having on the community but my thinking was restrained within the walls of the facility I was managing. It was not until I branched out of facilities for a short period and developed my strategic planning skills with a recreation consultant (Paul Lacey) and then as the recreation planner for the Bayside City Council I begun to understand the importance of sport recreation on the community and the challenges for different sectors of our community. I then applied my strategic skills when venturing back into facilities as the group manager for the Banyule City Council leisure sites where I was successful at project managing facility redevelopments and involved in the setup and management of new facilities.Victoria Melbourne is my hometown however I am currently employed by the YMCA Perth as the Area Manager for the three Port Hedland leisure facilities (Western Australia). The positions initial focus was to open the new Wanangkura Stadium – a $50 million facility with gymnasium, group fitness, stadium, crèche, squash and function/meeting rooms. Then the priority quickly shifted to re-opening the South Hedland Aquatic Centre which had received nine million dollar redevelopment. In conjunction with these major projects the position is also responsible for the management of the Gratwick Aquatic Centre in Port Hedland. The position has thus far been an amazing adventure and a fantastic challenge.
