About Daniel Niven

I have 30 years of experience working on avian population monitoring and assessment, beginning with a series of internships and research projects where I worked on population monitoring and banding projects throughout the US, in Mexico, Honduras, Panama and Kenya, as well as seabird and cetacean surveys in the Aleutians and north Atlantic, etc. I was a Predoctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian Institution and received my Ph.D. from the University of Illinois where I studied the effects of disturbance on the behavior, condition and population dynamics of Hooded Warblers and other neotropical migrant birds during both the breeding and non-breeding seasons. All my employment since graduating has involved some aspects of population monitoring, assessment and conservation, primarily with birds.

  • National Audubon Society
    Senior Scientist - Bird Conservation
National Audubon Society Oct 2003 - Jun 2012
    Urbana-Champaign, Illinois Area
In this role I was the lead analyst of Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count (CBC), a long-term continent-wide early-winter monitoring effort. During this 10 year period I collaborated closely with biologists at the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center to analyze population trends of North American birds using CBC data. We did this by applying to the CBC modified versions of the hierarchical models and analytic methods previously developed at Patuxent for the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS). We then… Show more In this role I was the lead analyst of Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count (CBC), a long-term continent-wide early-winter monitoring effort. We then used the results of these analyses to (for example) generate biodiversity indicators, continental and regional "State of the Birds" reports, and to address conservation issues such climate change.
