My main task was to be the link between the developers of a femtosecond fiber laser and the group working with the mass spectrometer. However, the laser was not producing enough output and had stability challenges, and required further optimization and development. Lasing could only be achieved if the optimal settings for the polarization controllers were found. In order to tackle this issue, I implemented a method to track both the optical and RF output of the cavity, and automated the measurement procedure in LabView. Subsequently, I used an automated search with python to find the optimal settings for the cavity. Show less

Therefore Distributed Bragg Reflectors have to be used for the reflection of light with such short wavelength. Due to the optical constants, transmissive focussing elements are not suitable, since the high absorbance of materials. Therefore Distributed Bragg Reflectors have to be used for the reflection of light with such short wavelength. These mirrors have a limited amount of reflectivity (~70%). The number of mirrors necessary for such a tool is 10+, and the in-band radiation of the 13.5nm-source is limited. The light source also produces unwanted out-of-band radiation which has to be filtered in the optical path. The goal of my research is to provide a solution to this problem at the expense of minimal 13.5 nm radiation. Show less

Thesis: "An astrophysical laboratory study of Pyrene in water ice"Main task: improved the resolution of a VUV spectrometer by implementing new set of slits. Successful measurements (VUV spectroscopy) performed on the emission of a hydrogen discharge lamp. This lamp was used for the photo-processing of Pyrene in water ice, which was tracked by UV-vis spectroscopy.
Internship
The goal of this research was to develop a technique capable of tracking the deformation of a model of an airplanewing located inside a windtunnel in realtime. A high speed camera has been used, in combination with a 'smart' LabView code. This code was written to be able to process and analyse the large amount of data produced by the camera, in order to track the deformation of the wing in realtime.
