Completed a successful doctorate project, working in my sponsor company Dstl (Defence Science Technology Laboratory), investigating potential methods to improve the usability of Nuclear Quadruple Resonance for defense and security contraband detection applications. Methods investigated included using a machine learning-based radio frequency interference (RFI) detection and suppression process to remove noise and make the NQR signal more clearly visible/detectable. Additional work was undertaken to investigate using symmetric projection attractor reconstruction (SPAR) to visualize NQR data in a novel method to produce a patterned image if the NQR signal is present. The work on this project has been written and published in my doctoral thesis, available here: https://openresearch.surrey.ac.uk/esploro/outputs/doctoral/Radio-Frequency-Interference-Suppression-for-in-situ/99613166202346The aim was to allow NMR/NQR technology to be used outside of a laboratory environment and performing in-situ applications, such as contraband detection, water content analysis, rock pore size investigations and quality control and assurance applications.Gained experience designing and building my own experiments, using practical skills, such as graphic design and woodwork, and technical skills, such as programming experimental equipment using LabVIEW and proprietary software, ensuring all pieces of equipment talk to each other and work correctly. I undertook recordings of large datasets and then used data science skills to process them using custom scripts in MATLAB to train the machine learning models and test their accuracy and reliability.
