Extraction & Isolation of Alkaloids• Uncaria tomentosa (Cat’s Claw) originates from South America, with the bark being used as a raw product and sold for consumption in the herbal supplement industry. The bark contains a family of compounds known as pentacyclic and tetracyclic oxindole alkaloids.• The alkaloids were extracted and then isolated using column chromatography. The isolation was confirmed using liquid chromatography - mass spectroscopy and characterized using proton NMR. Isolation of two compounds was achieved.• The pure sample can be used in the future as a standard (HPLC). This will enable fast quantification of the oxindole alkaloid content in the ground bark. Ensuring the presence of active ingredients that are processed and sold on the herbal market.

Hydrophobic Coating• To complete the “Nanoscience: Self-Assembly” course, a research project was conducted in teams of 4 based on a selection of research papers. I was the team leader and our team successfully produced a hydrophobic powder from silicon dioxide and the addition of a surfactant. • The powder was dissolved in various solvent systems and sprayed onto paper in order to investigate the impact of the dispersion forces on the hydrophobic powder in solution. Samples were taken and analysed by scanning electron microscopy enabling the surface to be viewed and collect elemental analysis data. The contract angle of the water droplet on the paper was also photographed and measured. • This has application in nanotechnology as coatings on various modes of transport; for example, it can can increase paint durability and reduce ice formation on aircraft.
