• Uncaria tomentosa (Cat’s Claw) originates from South America, with the bark being used as a raw product and sold for consumption in the herbal supplement industry. The bark contains a family of compounds known as.
• The alkaloids were extracted and then isolated using column chromatography. The isolation was confirmed using liquid chromatography - mass spectroscopy and characterized using proton NMR. Isolation of two compounds was.
• The pure sample can be used in the future as a standard (HPLC). This will enable fast quantification of the oxindole alkaloid content in the ground bark. Ensuring the presence of active ingredients that are processed.

• To complete the “Nanoscience: Self-Assembly” course, a research project was conducted in teams of 4 based on a selection of research papers. I was the team leader and our team successfully produced a hydrophobic powder.
• The powder was dissolved in various solvent systems and sprayed onto paper in order to investigate the impact of the dispersion forces on the hydrophobic powder in solution. Samples were taken and analysed by scanning.
• This has application in nanotechnology as coatings on various modes of transport; for example, it can can increase paint durability and reduce ice formation on aircraft.
