During my placement year at Centrica I was able to apply my knowledge gained in my first two years of University to real-world scenarios and problems. Due to working within the New Product Development department of Combined Heat and Power and Power Generation Units, I gained valuable experience in Design, mathematical sizing of components, drawing P&ID’s, production and testing. I also gained experience in critically reflecting on current working methods and looking for ways to improve due to my project-based work. Additionally, I learnt how to work in a fast-paced global company and working within a cross disciplinary engineering team.

As a Lifeguard at St Mellion International Resort, I have successfully monitored and supplied first aid to not only the swimmers but to all customers at this resort. Other responsibilities included maintaining a clean poolside and changing area, knowledge and understanding of all chemicals used (COSHH). I have also gained a lot of experience in the plant room where i am capable of pool testing, back-washing, refilling of the chlorine tank and re-calibrating the dosing units (PSOP). I was required to demonstrate initiative in working alone as part of a wider team.

I have developed my knowledge of mechanical engineering by undertaking vehicle servicing including oil and filter changing, brake pads and disks right through to gearbox replacement. I believe this has been a very beneficial practical experience which has complemented my academic studies.
