One year served as Officer of the Watch on HMS Gloucester. This role required being responsible for overall safety of all personnel onboard whilst at sea and alongside during the course of a 24 hour duty. Sea time requires constant monitoring of shipping, communications, whole-ship activities, management of personnel and administration. This role requires flawless communication skills when conducting dangerous evolutions such as launching the sea-boat, launching the helicopter or manoeuvring in close proximity to other vessels. It requires one to constantly re-focus and shift attention keeping a close eye on many different things at once. One is also required to respond instantly to emergency procedures in events such as fire, flood, man overboard, machinery failure or helicopter ditch.This role develops management, spatial awareness, multi tasking, concise and accurate communication.

This period gives all Naval Officers the grounding for life in the Navy. Through various methods such as practical leadership tasks, classroom work and time at sea, this is where the core attributes of military life are built.
