Profile bio

About Daniel Perea

I aim to compel people to look up to the stars. As a Museum Guide at Griffith Observatory, I give several presentations regarding our plethora of historical and interactive exhibits. In order to grab the attention of people walking around the Observatory, I would make announcements that would carry my voice across exhibits, attracting people nearby to my next talk. On numerous occasions, patrons have thanked me for not only providing clear, audible, and educational presentations, but also for presenting information in a way that encouraged them to think about the subject matter long after the talk was over. I am constantly recognized by colleagues and patrons of the observatory for my ability to communicate lofty and complicated concepts in space science to others in a clear and concise manner. My abilities in public speaking became so notable that the curator of the Observatory handpicked me to serve on her production team as not only a writer for several of our publications and exhibits, but also as a key producer for our once-a-month astronomy and space news show, All Space Considered.Upon receiving my bachelor's degree, I intend to work on a Master's degree in Science Communication so I may use my passion for science and my gift in public speaking to advocate for the advancement of science education.

I interpret astronomical information for the general public, give presentations on exhibits related to observing, astronomy, and related sciences, and answer questions related to the Observatory, astronomy, space, and related sciences. I also create and perform presentations, newsletters, and visual media for Observatory programs and exhibits using a wide variety of software programs.

Science Communication Intern

Monterey, California, United States

The California Marine Sanctuary Foundation (CMSF) is a nonprofit organization working to advance the understanding and stewardship of ocean resources in California. For over 27 years CMSF has partnered with local communities, businesses, government agencies, NGO's, and foundations to enhance coastal environments by leveraging science, technology, and collaboration. I developed technical and strategic skill sets to identify, interpret, and communicate science regarding water quality along the watersheds that drain to the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary. I designed video and multimedia strategies, organized and conducted interviews, and converted recorded webinars into segmented videos for target audiences to watch at later times. I also wrote, designed, and published blog postings, social media posts, and short promotional reels for the videos I helped produce. My work is represented on the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation YouTube Channel, highlighting water quality protection projects and the continuing preservation of the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. I also developed working proficiencies in app-related video editing tools, such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Canva, and polished my skills in graphics creation, sound editing, cinematography, and storyboarding with a specific focus on science communication. I utilized and strategized with social media, such as TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter, to convey science in educational, ethical, and inspirational manners to large and diverse audiences.
