About Daniel Porter
I am a final year PhD student at the School of Metallurgy and Materials, University of Birmingham. I am working with industry partners such as Dstl and Alloyed to help with the discovery, processing, and characterisation of reactive materials. For this, I have investigated a novel laser plume analysis method for measuring material reactivity in a lab-based environment. I have also investigated the general microstructure of new reactive materials and am hoping to investigate the applicability of Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) to the manufacturing process.I have a mechanical engineering background with a MEng from the University of Warwick (First Class). This combined with my materials knowledge from my PhD gives me a broad flexible skill set.Some of my expertise include CAD (computer aided design), Matlab, material characterisation, EDM (Electro discharge machining), DLD ( direct laser deposition), LPBF (laser powder bed fusion) and HIPing (Hot isostatic pressing) of metallic powders and general problem solving.
