In 1884, an inspired novella called "Flatland" was first published, written by Edwin Abbott Abbott. Meant as a satire of hierarchical Victorian society, the protagonist, "Square", tells of life in a truly two-dimensional world. With only the dimensions of depth and width, life in Flatland has its quirks as well as its dangers. At the conflict of the story is Square's meeting of the strange, ever-pulsating new arrival, "Sphere", whose circular cross-section passes in and out of Flatland as a constantly growing and shrinking circle. Sphere grants Square a vision of the three-dimensional world beyond Flatland, forever changing his understanding of the world he perceives with his own senses.We are the Square, and the insights in our data is the Sphere. Our perception of the relationships between events and circumstances is limited to our own senses, but innovation in methods of visualization and data science have shown us something that we have been unable to see looking at spreadsheets and pivot tables of data. The "vision" of data science is to understand those hidden relationships that sit just beyond our line of sight, in a dimension as real as our own.At Equifax, I am responsible for a team in search of these relationships in business and operation data for our Workforce Solutions applications. Common tools for us include Google BigQuery, TensorFlow, Tableau (and Tableau Server), Cloud Composer, Python automation and analytics, and other business intelligence methods. These tools are enabling our business to voraciously consume the myriad of data points and draw conclusions on the success of business decisions and management practices.I hold a Masters of Science in Applied Statistics, Analytics & Data Science from the University of Kansas. I also earned my “Professional Machine Learning Engineer” certification for the Google Cloud Platform. With this knowledge, I hope to always be equipped for the ongoing data revolution.
