Ph.D. Student

Winnipeg, Canada

I worked as Ph.D. student with Dr. James Young. Thesis title: Now you’re teleoperating with power: learning from video games to improve teleoperation interfaces. Thesis submitted September, 2019; defended February, 2020; graduated on June 4th, 2020

Sep 2015 - Jun 2020

Research Assistant

Winnipeg, Canada Area

As Dr. Young's M.Sc. student, I worked on creating new techniques for designing Non-Player Characters in video games. I am constantly improving my skills as a researcher, as well as learning new computer science skills such as interaction techniques, digital image processing, simulations, and computer vision.I have thoroughly enjoyed my teaching duties as a TA (1.5 years), and have helped review papers for international conferences such as TUI, IUI, ACE, 3DUI, GI, HAI, CHI, and RO-MAN. I am currently volunteering as the Web Chair for the ACM SIGCHI conference HAI for the second year in a row.Through the summer of 2011 I worked on a self-driven project under Dr. James E. Young in the field of Human Robot Interaction (HRI). It focused on observing how robots integrated into a public space when they're appearance changed dynamically based on input from the public. The work was published as a Late Breaking Report at HRI 2012.Throughout the term, I gained many skills I had not encountered in my almost 6 years at the University: soldering, electronics, presenting research, critically analyzing research, and how to set up and run an experiment.

May 2011 - Jan 2015

Research Assistant

Calgary, Canada

Under the guidance of Dr. Ehud Sharlin, I co-supervised two undergraduate students during their final-year research projects in human-robot interaction (HRI). At the same time, I did an academic literature review for Electric Monk Media, based in Winnipeg, summarizing the advances and knowledge in academia about virtual reality techniques, interfaces, and challenges. The HRI projects were: - socially integrating a humanoid robot into an authority position in an industrial setting (an inspector of other workers' products in a production line); - shared presence (performing a task as yourself while simultaneously being controlling a telepresence robot in the same space as you in order to complete two-person tasks)- movable displays (can we make computing easier by physically moving monitors according to a user's current task?)

Sep 2014 - Dec 2014

Reserach Intern

User Interface Research Group Igarashi Laboratory

A brief sojourn to work with Dr. Takeo Igarashi and other talented students and Post-Docs on my Master's Thesis work: designing and interface to help make authoring Non-Player Character's behaviours in games easier. In addition, I helped out with some TA duties at the university, such as assignment creation and marking.

Jan 2013 - Aug 2013

Intern Researcher

Kyoto, Japan

As an intern researcher, I was exposed to a globally competitive research facility in an extremely international setting. During the year, I worked on modeling pedestrian motion in low and medium density environments such as shopping malls by focusing on predicting medium-term goals in a pedestrian's walking path. I worked under Dr. Francesco Zanlungo and Dr. Masahiro Shiomi in the Intelligent Robotics and Communications Laboratory.I gained skills in research, modeling and simulation, EM algorithms, working with large data sets (in the order of millions), and optimization.

May 2010 - Apr 2011

Network Researcher

Communications Research Centre

Ottawa, Canada Area

As my second Co-op term in my degree, I worked in one of Canada's leading telecommunication research centers studying Malware Detection in a simulated Internet environment under Dr. Mathieu Couture. My job consisted primarily of implementing common internet services such as SMTP, DNS, and IRC in order to fool malware into executing on our simulated environments in order for us to study them.During my stay, I experienced my first professional exposure the research community, and gained skills in honeypot systems, various Internet protocols, linux networking tools, Wireshark/Ethereal packet sniffing, and dynamic firewall management.

Sep 2009 - Dec 2009

Software Developer

Winnipeg, Canada Area

I worked at the Canadian Network for Public Health Intelligence (CNPHI) branch of the PHAC (Public Health Agency of Canada). As my first co-op internship term, it was my first job in my field in a professional capacity. We developed systems for real-time collaborative tracking of diseases and epidemics as they spread around Canada and the world.I gained skills in the J2EE/JSP frameworks, using the Eclipse development environment, Unit Testing, proper Source Control Management, working with large codebases (several thousand lines of code) and working as part of a team of developers.
