With 15 years in the electrical trade and multiple licensures/certificates to back it, I've found my place, Safety. Being a Safety Manager has allowed me to get on a different level with team members and give them a new outlook regarding hazards and mitigation. Those years of experience and the levels of authority that were climbed give me the edge needed to cultivate relationships with those on the grind. Far too long have been the days where safety was considered an inhibitor and safety personnel the Bogeyman or Nitpickers. I strive to deliver federal, local and administrative standard to my teammates in a clear manner that they can understand. While at the same time keeping in mind they are human after all and mistakes, whether intended or not, will occur. With my delivery and day to day interactions, I believe in keeping the team informed of hazards, procedures and additional control methods. When I encounter a team or a team member who's not dialed in to safety, that's considered an opportunity to educate not cut off. Constructive criticism is a must but I feel the need to provide positive reinforcement to hopefully curve any need of criticism. This achieved by interaction, Q & As and listening to the teams thoughts and needs. Our teams need to understand the why of safety but they also need not be afraid of it. We need them to feel compelled and comfortable enough to make inquiry when unsure of tasking. in addition to knowing they have the right to a safe and healthy workplace.
