I speak science to congress. I develop policy, backstop it with credible research, and communicate this to the lay public with clarity and wit. While earning my Ph.D. I was sent to do scientific research on every continent, and I have lectured at the university level in climate, geology, oceanography, economics, and political science.On policy, my particular competency is in all things carbon. Carbon cycling, carbon pricing, and carbon removal are all core strengths where my expertise in science and policy overlap. Trained as a geologist and oceanographer, I have a bedrock understanding of sources and sinks for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and how carbon moves and is transformed between reservoirs.As a policy practitioner who has helped pass several bills through Congress, taking policy from inception to passage is more than just theory. As the lead technical expert supporting congressional offices ahead of the first bipartisan carbon pricing bill introduced in nearly a decade, I improvised policy solutions on the fly to build unusual coalitions and help lawmakers build support for quality legislation.I specialize in developing strategies that work, and in bringing people along with me. A strategy you can’t communicate is a strategy that won’t work. Change requires people, and people require a compelling vision articulated clearly and applied consistently.
