It's theorized that Ctenophora is the first branching phylum of Animalia, and therefore may have evolved its neural system differently from the rest of Metazoan. By testing common transmitters(GABA, Glutamate, Glycine) on different ctenophore species' behavior, the role's of these transmitters in ctenophore biology may be elucidated. The majority of my project involved filming ctenophores in a controlled setting to establish a behavioral baseline and to conduct and record pharmacological assays. -
