Following the success of last year’s Wild Citizen project, I was invited on to a similar role working on increasing food security and teaching children where food comes from and the basics of gardening. As part of research by the life sciences school into increasing food security in the UK and teaching children, working towards a research paper to evaluate the best way of teaching primary-aged children about food and food security. The key lesson for this project is how increasing biodiversity can help increase food production with key functions such as pollination.

A 12-week internship working with the MARINEFF project, a four-year €5.7 million project with the aim of increasing biodiversity in coastal infrastructure across the English Channel. My role consisted in finishing the project by conducting legal and financial implications of the project, with a particular focus on Biodiversity Net Gain and Nature-based solutions legal framework. Developing my ability to value biodiversity and attention to detail for organisations and businesses.

Wild citizens encourages primary aged children to explore the biodiversity in their school grounds. The aim of the project is to give children the tools and knowledge about the environment around them, why it’s important and ways to encourage a healthy ecosystem. The project is part of research conducted by the education department of the University of Southampton. To learn the best way of teaching environmental studies and potential ways this could be implemented in the syllabus.
