I am the Director of Academic Programmes at Oxford's Rothermere American Institute (RAI), a History Faculty teaching associate, and a research associate of University College. I am a historian of the twentieth century United States and wider world with a special interest in political economy, policy, urban, and labor history. My current research examines the responses of members of the business community, subnational community organizations, organized labor, and elected officials (national and local) to the economic instability of the 1970s and 1980s. I am particularly interested in industrial policy, the emergence of the 'Rustbelt', the US steel, automobile and computer industries, the history of economic development, and trade policy. My book, tentatively titled State of Development: Preserving the American Economic Century in an Era of Anxious Capitalism, will be published by Columbia University Press. At the RAI, I am responsible for developing the Institute's academic programming, coordinating the RAI-Kinder Institute summer school, and overseeing visiting fellows. Alongside this, I also teach and supervise undergraduates and postgraduates across a range of topics for the History Faculty and Department of Politics and International Relations.
