We had a dream of saving money to start a store when we got out. But times change, goals change, and people change. Our paths diverged, and I started a journey from boy to sailor to engineer. Every step of the way has shaped me into who I am, gaining the knowledge, skills, and wisdom I needed to succeed as a versatile and adaptable engineer.In the navy I saw how vast the world is firsthand. I went deep sea fishing in Iceland, saw the Sydney Opera House, swam in the Philippine Sea, and I paid a humbling visit to the Nagasaki Peace Park. But I didn't just see the world. As I rose through the ranks of the Navy, I learned how to follow and how to lead. I learned how to troubleshoot technical issues and resolve social ones. I learned how to be confident in myself and respectful of others.Eventually I decided it was time to further my education and get a "real" job. That path took me back home, where I started my degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, because the digital side of electronics appealed to me, and I enjoyed programming. I learned what the school taught, but not just that. I learned how to manage my time, and how to study. I learned to recognize when I need help. I learned to rely on peers and mentors. I was lucky to get funding for graduate school and began filling my engineering toolbox with a variety of practical skills, including PCB design, firmware programming, 3D modeling, and rapid prototyping. I learned how to "fail fast", to find and fix flaws iteratively. I learned how to say no without offending. Using these skills, I designed a complicated electromechanical system from the ground up.After graduating, I was fortunate to be hired for my first job post-graduation at In-Situ Inc. as a Firmware Engineer. I had a tight-knit team that worked well together and played off each other's strengths. I felt there was no problem we couldn't tackle together. They valued my experience and helped polish off the rough edges of a recent graduate into a competent engineer. I learned to use testing frameworks to turn "failing fast" into "failing never". I learned to be a better C++ developer, how to deal with legacy code, and gained insight into modern design.I cherish my time at In-Situ, but that leg of the journey is over, and I am excited to see what is around the bend.
